St. Thomas Magazine-April 2026: It's Time for Adventure!
- Apr 1
- 4 min read

April on St. Thomas is not a quiet month. Carnival is building, the water is calling and this issue went a lot of places at once.
April is one of those months on island that just has an energy to it. The troupes are rehearsing. The feathers are being sewn. The calendar is stacking up. And somewhere out on the water between here and the BVI, a flamingo is wading through a salt flat that used to belong to them long before any of us showed up.
Issue 11 of St. Thomas Magazine covers all of it. Wildlife, Carnival, diving, Anegada, live music, dining and where to stay. This one is a full island snapshot and we are proud of every page.
Here is what is inside.
Your Guide to STT Carnival 2026
Carnival on St. Thomas is the biggest celebration of the year, full stop. It is also a week-long commitment if you want to do it right, and doing it right requires knowing where to be and when. Our Carnival guide covers what to see, what to wear and what to expect from J'ouvert all the way through the Adult Parade on May 2. Whether this is your first Carnival or your fiftieth, the guide is your cheat sheet. April 26 through May 2. Get ready.
Let's Escape to Anegada
Anegada sits at the top of the British Virgin Islands chain, almost hidden from view. It is flat, it is remote and it is exactly the kind of place that earns its own feature. We took a day off and spent a perfect day on one of the most pristine islands in the entire Caribbean. White sand that goes on longer than you expect, water that does not look real until you are standing in it and Tipsy's by Ann right there on the beach for when you need lobster and a good reason to stay longer than you planned. The full feature is inside and yes, we think you need more than a day.
They're Back: The Return of the Caribbean Flamingo to the Virgin Islands
The Caribbean Flamingo was gone from these islands for decades. Here is how they found their way home.
When birder Nancy Fowler spotted 64 wild flamingos at Salt Pond on St. John, her first response was to count again. The birds were real. American flamingos have historical roots in the Virgin Islands going back centuries and their return is one of the most significant wildlife stories happening in the Caribbean right now. This feature is not just a bird sighting. It is a conservation story, a history lesson and honestly one of the more quietly exciting things we have covered. Read it even if you are not a birder.
50 Years Under the Surface

Aqua Action Dive Center has outlasted trends, hurricanes and four different owners. What has not changed is the water.
Aqua Action has been operating in the Virgin Islands since 1976. This in-depth feature takes a close look at one of the longest-running dive shops on island, what five decades of watching this reef looks like from below the surface and why an operation like this matters to the future of diving here. This is not a sponsored piece. It is a real conversation about a real institution. If you care about the ocean around these islands, this one lands differently.
Street Level VI: BVI Big List
Our friends at Street Level VI are back with the live music rundown and this month they went across the water. The BVI Big List covers the live music scene across Soper's Hole, Cane Garden Bay, White Bay, Road Town and Marina Cay. If your April plans include any time in the BVI, or if you are just a fan of the broader Virgin Islands music scene, this is your guide. Street Level VI does not miss.
St. Thomas Dining Guide
No matter where you are staying on island, we have you covered from sunrise to late night fun. The April dining guide breaks down restaurants by area so you always know what is close, what is good and what kind of night you are trying to have. This month's picks include The Shack at Hull Bay, Mim's Seaside Bistro in Bolongo and T's Restaurant and Chicken Fry. The full guide is inside with a lot more where those came from.
Where to Stay on St. Thomas
St. Thomas is a small island with a lot of options and where you land changes everything about your trip. Our Where to Stay section breaks the island into four zones: Northside for quiet and lush, East End for beaches and activities, West for remote and day trip friendly and Southside for hotels, resorts and easy access to restaurants. Each area has its own personality. The guide covers beaches nearby, places to eat, villas and lodging options, points of interest and excursions so you can match where you stay to how you want to spend your time.
What's Coming in May
We are already working on the May issue and it is going to be a good one. Here is what we are building:
Best places to stay for summer deals
On, in and near the water: your summer activities guide
Sea turtle nesting season on St. Croix and St. John
Up close with island businesses
May is when summer starts to feel real on St. Thomas and we plan to cover it accordingly.
Adventure is not always far away. Sometimes it is 64 flamingos at the end of a road you have driven a hundred times. Sometimes it is a 50-year-old dive operation that still loves the reef like it is day one. Sometimes it is pointing your boat toward a flat blue horizon and just going. Happy Carnival, friends...it's time for adventure!
